Vienna - The perfect Fairytale
Find your own fairytale in Vienna, the city of timeless classics. Loved by romantics for its dreamy architecture and cozy food spots, the city has a flourishing modern creative scene too. Whether it’s art, opera or a contemporary dining experience you’re after, the city has so much to offer. Here’s our Clos19 guide to some unmissable spots, both traditional and modern.
Austria’s capital has forever been the destination of choice for travelers with a penchant for the glamour and romanticism of yesteryear. Classical music and opera, art and baroque palaces are all part of its DNA, though the city is having a renaissance with new boutiques and independent stores aimed at young creatives opening up all the time. It’s little wonder then, that Vienna was voted the "most livable city in the world" last year by the EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit), becoming the first European city to take the number one spot in the history of the survey.
Vienna is stunning at any time of year, but it’s a place that comes into its own in the winter, with cozy coffee shops and snug wine taverns hidden away down narrow, winding streets. Add a sprinkling of snow and Vienna becomes a veritable winter wonderland, plucked straight out of a fairytale.
While the sense of history is palpable, when it comes to dining out, it would be a shame not to add some modernity to the mix. Here are our picks for places to stay, eat, drink and see in Vienna.
If you’re after a slice of traditional Vienna, complete with lavish décor and opulent, soft furnishings, then make sure you stay at the Hotel Sacher. A veritable institution, having been around since the 1800s, this hotel oozes old-world charm and grandeur. Have a slice of the original Sacher cake in the hotel’s sumptuous, red velvet-clad restaurant, or sip a glass of Krug in its regal blue bar. This is luxury at its finest.
Once you’ve had your fill of classic Viennese tradition, mix it up and book a table at the ultra-modern restaurant, Steirereck. Located in the heart of one of the city’s parks within a slick, metal construction, Steirereck plays with traditional Austrian ingredients and flavors, giving them a modern, natural twist. Try the blackberries and plum with curry, hemp and verbena with a glass of Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir and you’ll see why this place has earned its two Michelin stars.
Take the weight off after a day of exploring with a cocktail and an incredible view over the city from floor-to-ceiling windows. If you do find you’re getting tired of the palace rooftops, however, then simply look up: the ceiling is a work of modern art in itself. With themed music days and nights as well as a long list of modern cocktails, Das Loft is classy and cool.
