Make the Invisible Visible
Born in 1987, visual artist Vhils grew up in a working-class suburb of Lisbon. Today, he is hailed as one of the most innovative artists of his generation and has become renowned for developing a unique visual language. After participating in the 2008 ‘Cans Festival’ organized by Banksy, Vhils exploded onto the global art scene. With mallet and chisel, carbide-tipped drill bits and jack hammers, and plastic explosives, he has created more than 200 of his portraits around the globe.
Supporting innovative talent has been an integral part of Hennessy’s identity since its founding in 1765. The Hennessy Very Special Limited Edition by Vhils opens an exciting new chapter in the Maison’s long tradition of artistic partnerships. Vhils’ approach to his art is a metaphor for the art of cognac-making: both exist thanks to the unpredictable, immutable force of time and the elements. For each, the creative process is a poetic quest to make the invisible visible.
Drawing on his pioneering acid painting technique, Vhils created a vibrantly textured work, splashed with black ink and dark yellows all on a backdrop of fragments of historic Hennessy billboards and symbols such as grapes, the Hennessy coat-of-arms, and the three stars of Hennessy Very Special.
