    Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1989

The spirit of this 27-year-old scotch was distilled in Scotland’s tallest stills in 1989. After initial ageing, the scotch was finished in a handful of sought-after casks, including those which once contained either oloroso sherry, bourbon, wine or – most prestigious of all – Côte-Rôtie wines. Finally, these casks were united in a masterful assemblage.

Celebrating an Extraordinary Legacy

Defining moments
Defining moments

In the words of Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s acclaimed director of distilling and whisky creation, the scotches of Bond House No. 1 offer a “unique opportunity to trace the evolution of taste”. Marked for greatness from their years of distillation, these rare and precious vintages celebrate momentous junctures in Glenmorangie’s past. Each is aged meticulously over decades – and released only when the Distillery’s creators deem that the scotch has reached its absolute best. In Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1989, the Distillery reveals a remarkable tribute to a bygone era.

Still house’s swansong
Still house’s swansong

By 1989, it was clear that Glenmorangie’s still house was too small to satisfy the growing desire for the Distillery’s single malt. The following year, Bonded Warehouse No. 1, the Vintage Collection’s namesake, was transformed into a majestic larger still house – Glenmorangie’s "Highland cathedral". So ended the tenure of its loyal predecessor. But the legacy of this traditional building, home to Scotland’s tallest stills for more than a century, would not be forgotten. As some of the final spirit distilled within its walls lay maturing in casks, Dr Bill became intrigued by its distinctive character.

The creator’s flair
The creator’s flair

Inspired to create a uniquely intense scotch from 1989’s spirit, Dr Bill arranged for a tiny parcel to be transferred into rare Côte-Rôtie wine casks for finishing. Glenmorangie had never before harnessed the power of these casks, and he was fascinated to explore their influence on scotch held within. As this precious parcel reached its prime, he balanced its character with other select parcels of scotch from that vintage, each finished in sought-after casks. Brought together by Dr Bill's skill and vision, 27 years after the spirit was distilled, their union achieves the finesse and complex richness of this truly limited bottling.

Food pairing:
Savor with smoked meat, shellfish and desserts

Begin with lightly smoked pheasant breast, served with a pear and pecan chutney tartlet.

Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1989 complements many fish and shellfish. We suggest vanilla-butter-poached langoustines, alongside green apple, pickled celery and candied walnut.

This scotch’s balanced sweetness works wonderfully with the soft, subtle tastes of raspberry and vanilla marshmallow.
