Blend and Origin
Veuve Clicquot Cave Privée Rosé 1990
This vintage comprises pinot noir (47%), meunier (9%) and chardonnay (27%) from 17 grands and premiers crus, with the addition of 17% still red wine from Bouzy. Record sunshine in the months before harvest allowed sugar levels to soar. This, combined with normal levels of rainfall earlier in the year, created a champagne that surpassed the cellar master’s expectations.

Beyond all expectation
When Madame Clicquot introduced rosé d'assemblage – the method of combining red wine with champagne – she changed the industry forever. Today, a vintage rosé is only declared if the cellar master and his team of oenologists find the wines exceptional after vinification: 700 are tasted, and if they are judged to have great ageing potential, then a vintage will be declared. The champagne becomes a rosé style later, when red wine is added, imparting colour and vinous character.
Weather conditions in 1990 were ideal for creating champagnes with ripe, full flavours. After a mild, wet winter, the buds opened early and were affected by frosts in April. Cool temperatures in June resulted in prolonged flowering, but the ensuing hot, dry summer – and exceptional sunshine – ultimately aided the development of an abundant crop of grapes with an excellent balance of sweetness and acidity.
Veuve Clicquot’s Cave Privée champagnes are rare vintages that are held back in the maison’s chalk cellars, resting on their lees in ideal conditions until they are chosen for disgorgement and a unique, light dosage. This 1990 vintage, like all other champagnes in the collection, was selected and preserved for more than 30 years by successive cellar masters – only released when it reached perfection and a grand maturity.
