Bringing out the very best of any one year in the vineyards, whatever the weather might have thrown at the region, is something of a speciality of Krug. Each Krug vintage is a celebration of that particular year and, in the case of 2004, it was a wonderful one.
After glorious weather from mid-September to early October brought a vast amount of perfectly ripe fruit to choose from, Krug's winemakers were able to combine a clutch of highly expressive, bright, structured and elegant wines to create a perfectly harmonious blend. Since then, a stay of 20 years in the cellars has done nothing but further enhance it, making this vintage one to treasure.

TASTING NOTES:
Luminous and fresh

Appearance

Light golden.

Aroma

On the nose, there are initial notes of ginger, candied citrus and quince, followed by richer aromas evoking lemon meringue tart and plums.

Taste

It's well balanced on the palate, with light notes of brioche and honey giving way to an array of fresh citrus fruits, including oranges, lemons and mandarins, enhanced by an elegant finish.

BLEND AND ORIGIN:

After the challenging extremes and small yields of 2003, it was with some relief that the more generous 2004 season offered a huge amount of choice, resulting in harvested grapes in excellent condition.

As a result of such a bounty, the wines from that year are highly expressive, bright and elegant with a shining structure.

The final blend is an almost identical mix of vibrant chardonnay (39%) and structured pinot noir (37%) combined with the vivacity, tension and citrus notes of meunier (24%).

"After 20 years in Krug's cellar, the 2004 vintage has gained in expression, harmony, and finesse and, as with all Krug champagne, it will continue to gain with time."

Serve with delicate mains, such as artichokes with a lightly spiced creamy mayonnaise sauce, white fish in lemon sauce and olive oil, sole meunière and even Thai cuisine with ginger and lemongrass flavours.

Fresh goat's cheese and candied citrus will underline the champagne's freshness, while a lemon meringue tart makes for a perfectly paired dessert.
