Details
Capturing a specific moment in time, and then bottling it, is a wonderful way to celebrate the distinct character of a particular year in Krug's historic vineyards. Each Krug Vintage is a harmonious blend of the most expressive wines from a single year, enhanced by a stay of more than 10 years in the cellars, and this 2011 release is wonderfully unique.
After an unpredictable and slightly radical year, with sudden bursts of scorching heat just before harvest, this 2011 vintage contains some unusually juicy and ripe chardonnays that make up 37% of the finished blend. The resulting vintage has a spirited roundness to it, which perfectly captures the character of 2011.

BLEND & ORIGIN CHAMPAGNE

BLEND AND ORIGIN:
Krug 2011

The year 2011 was unpredictable in the vineyards – early hot weather caused the vines to develop rapidly and flowering to occur earlier than usual, while a spike of scorching temperatures right before harvest resulted in juicier, riper grapes than previous harvests.

Almost half of the blend (46%) is made from a selection of grapes from Krug's pinot noir plots, which bring a beautiful structure and magnificent balance, while 17% comes from meunier, which adds freshness with elegant bitters.

Wines from Krug's chardonnay plots were most affected by the spike in hot temperatures, bringing ripe and juicy fruit aromas to 37% of the blend, and roundness and generosity rather than the usual tension.

"After 12 years in the cellars, the 2011 vintage has gained in expression, harmony, and finesse, and – as with all Krug champagne – will continue to gain with time."

Every vintage tells a story:
A Krug vintage with its own tale to tell

Krug loves to tell a story, and with each Krug Vintage it gets to tell the tale of a particular year in a specific vineyard.

Unlike Krug Grande Cuvée, which is always a selection of the best wines of a good year, Krug Vintage is a harmonious selection of wines that best express the story and character of a year.

Getting the blend right:
The cornerstone of Krug's craftsmanship

Right from the start, Krug has been committed to crafting the best champagne every year, regardless of variations in climate and the effect this has on a harvest.

As part of this commitment, Krug turns each harvest from every plot into a separate wine, and then follows its individual character before any blending decisions are made.

This allows Krug’s cellar master to identify and discern wines that can enrich that year’s creations, be kept as reserve wines for later use, or be rejected.

Celebrating nature's bounty:
A snapshot of the region in 2011

When looking back at the harvest of 2011, Cellar Master Julie Cavil said it was clear that the climate had a noticeable impact on the wines, with unusually hot days almost "cooking" the fruit, while the sugar content remained moderate.

The pinot noirs exhibited balance and structure, the meuniers retained freshness and elegant bitters, and the chardonnays – the grapes most affected by a sudden spike in temperature right before harvest – were juicier and riper than in other years.

This resulted in exemplary roundness and generosity rather than their usual tension.
