Blend and Origin
Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1990
While the barley crop of 1990 was challenging and yields were small, this vintage whisky nonetheless reveals a pleasing combination of finesse, elegance and vibrancy. After distillation in Scotland’s tallest stills, the blend is moved through to ex-bourbon casks for 25 years, with a small amount reserved for ageing in ex-sherry casks.
This product can only be purchased by persons over 18 years of age.
The first of many unique stories
In the words of Dr Bill Lumsden, director of distilling and whisky creation at Glenmorangie, the Bond House No. 1 series offers connoisseurs “the unique opportunity to trace the evolution of taste through the decades.” Each release in the series will be made from the barley of a single harvest, offering a pure encapsulation of that year’s conditions, from the turning of the seasons to the taste of the water through to the particular oakiness of the casks. Each vintage released will reflect a different moment in Glenmorangie’s past, with the first – Grand Vintage Malt 1990 – telling a story of transition, growth, challenge and intensity.
A momentous year in Glenmorangie’s history, 1990 saw Bond No. 1, one of the largest warehouses on the estate, transformed into a magnificent still house to meet surging demand. Now revered as the “Highland Cathedral,” the still house soon became the beating heart of the Glenmorangie family, containing within it the tallest stills in Scotland, their copper necks as tall as a fully grown giraffe. As a tribute to this event, the Bond No. 1 series was created. Grand Vintage Malt 1990 is housed in a unique coffret crafted from copper and wood, at once evoking and contrasting the legacy of the Bond No. 1 warehouse with the modernity of the still house.
While Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1990 is characterised by its smoothness, the method behind its creation was far more complex. The barley harvest from the previous summer proved problematic for whisky makers in 1990. Hard to process through the distillery, only small quantities of spirit were produced. However, much to the surprise of its creators, the resulting whisky proved sublime – a floral, fruity expression of a single year. After the blend was nurtured for 25 years, a limited number of bottles of this elixir were created, meaning Grand Vintage Malt 1990 is as notable for its scarcity as it is for its remarkable taste.
