Our friends at Glenmorangie have released a delicious new single malt whisky called A Tale of Cake, which... you guessed it... is best enjoyed with a slice of cake. Of course, this delicious combination set us thinking about how to pair our favourite spirits with dessert. From decadent fondue to fruit and iced dishes, read on to discover our 5 most mouth-watering ideas.

Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake & Pineapple Cake

First up, the whisky which started it all, Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake. This lusciously tropical limited-edition whisky from Glenmorangie was actually inspired by a pineapple upside-down cake. And to celebrate its release, the Distillery teamed up with pastry maestro Dominique Ansel for a series of cake pairings to showcase Glenmorangie’s flavours. Sticking with the pineapple theme, he has created a stunning Layered Pineapple Cake, to enjoy with A Tale of Cake. Just looking at it is enough to get us searching for a pineapple sponge recipe of our own.


Hennessy X.O & Chocolate Cake

This bold rich cognac, marking its 150th anniversary in 2020, gets the thumbs up as a partner for pudding, from the experts at Wine Enthusiast magazine. “Consider as a dessert pairing,” they suggest, noting Hennessy X. O’s deeply sweet tastes of “bold toffee, cocoa, fig and gingerbread”. To really complement those rich flavours, we recommend a molten chocolate cake, topped with custard for extra indulgence...


Glenmorangie Original & Poached Pears

For its light, fruity tastes, Glenmorangie’s Original is an all-time favourite of ours – particularly alongside delicate fruit dishes. Again, we’re inspired by Dominique Ansel’s stunning creation, which hints at the flavours you find in the whisky. He floats poached pears on a whisky syrup with lemon thyme and orange notes, to bring out The Original’s signature citrus side. And while we’re no experts in the kitchen, we can riff on that!


Ardbeg Uigeadail & Chocolate Fondue

Keep it simple with this luscious pairing, which we think tastes even better outside. All you need is a pot of melted dark chocolate, some hunks of fresh fruit and a few glasses of Ardbeg Uigeadail – as easy to serve by the firepit as round the dinner table. The intensity of the chocolate and fruit set off the sweet, treacly tastes of Uigeadail, a special vatting which showcases the luscious raisin tones of old sherry casks. And we know you’ll appreciate the intriguing contrast this dessert brings to Ardbeg’s famed smoky side.


Hennessy Paradis & Nougat Glacé

Made from 100 eaux-de-vie aged for up to 130 years, this is a cognac of stunning elegance and depth. And to set off its silky tastes of honey, spice and fruits, you’ll need an equally voluptuous dessert. Try nougat glacé – a frozen delicacy containing meringue, cream, fruit and nuts. Served together with Hennessy Paradis, the effect is wonderfully luxurious.
