Around the Christmas Table with Herz & Blut
With Christmas just around the corner, we are partnering with different tastemakers to bring you their foolproof tips and tricks for festive hosting.
Clos19 talks to Maria-Silva Villbrandt from Herz und Blut (@herz.und.blut). Three Berlin-based friends form the team behind the online magazine Herz & Blut which has been around since 2010 and brings to its readers the best of interior, lifestyle, food, travel and beauty.
Maria-Silva Villbrandt is the globetrotter at Herz & Blut. In addition to travel, she is also passionate about tracking down the latest food & drink trends. We discuss Christmas essentials, from table settings to pairings and she shares with us a secret to make a Whisky Sour even tastier.
What is your foolproof dish for the holiday season?
My foolproof dish for the holiday season might be a coq au vin in a casserole. In winter times no dish beats the smell and taste of redwine, farmers vegetable and homegrown potatoes from the garden. Served with a fresh salad this dish makes everyone happy.
What is your drink of choice for the holiday season?
Actually I am real white wine fan, but it's not holiday season without a brilliant glass of champagne. It’s not a secret, that I really like a glass of Ruinart Rosé Champagne.
Do you have a favourite winter cocktail?
Winter is made for Whisky Sours! Once a bartender told me his secret is to infuse whisky with walnuts for a few days. This adds a whole new layer of flavour and makes this drink even better!
What is your favourite food and wine or champagne pairing?
For me the perfect match is champagne and oysters! I love the ritual drinking a glass of champagne and sharing some oysters! Even in Berlin oyster bars are becoming more and more popular.
Christmas table setting: modern or traditional?
Our Herz & Blut team definitely prefers a more modern natural setting, whereas I am big fan of traditional table settings. I do love classic red decoration settings and you can be sure an Advent wreath is present at my table.
What are some of your Christmas table setting essentials?
Candles are a must! As child I always loved seeing my grandparents' traditional Christmas pyramid. Nowadays I prefer less glam and more natural essentials like fir branches, nuts and fruits combined with some Christmas baubles.
Do you have a favourite Christmas playlist?
My favourite Christmas playlist is an old German vinyl which my parents and grandparents always used to play. Beside that’s no Christmas playlist is complete without “Last Christmas” and “Santa Baby”.
