Ardbeg is not exactly shy when it comes to experimenting with new distilling methods. So it comes as no surprise that this limited-edition whisky – released to celebrate Ardbeg Day 2024 – is quite the showstopping spectacle.
The result of an experimental marriage of whisky matured in rare port wine casks (a first for Ardbeg) and the more classic ex-bourbon barrels, it's a peculiar yet exciting mix of flavours and aromas. As you'd expect, there's a load of full-on smoke, but with that comes fragrant, floral top notes and a backdrop of sweetness.

Appearance
Sunset orange.
Aroma
Perfumed and aromatic with top notes of lavender, vetiver and incense, and deeper notes of leather, almond nuttiness and a touch of wax. A splash of water reveals woodsmoke, damp peat moss, a hint of menthol and more antique leather.
Taste
The mouthfeel is salty but viscous and leads into a burst of powerful salty and savoury flavours. There's also a background sweetness with flavours of smoky pear crumble and fudge, and a long lingering finish.

Bottled to mark Ardbeg Day in 2024, Ardbeg Spectacular is described as a palate-provoking, taste-tantalising whisky wonder.
In a first for the distillery, the whisky has been matured in rare port wine casks and then married with classic ex-bourbon barrels to impart a mesmerising and somewhat bizarre array of flavours.
This unconventional maturation disrupts the usual flavour profiles, offering fragrant top notes including lavender, deeper base notes of damp peat and woodsmoke, and sweet background notes of pear crumble and salted caramel fudge.
As with all Ardbeg whisky, it's been non-chill filtered to retain maximum flavour, body and depth.
