Pale Straw
Intense with bursts of charcoal, creosote, tar and treacle toffee followed by hints of fennel, celery and green peppers. Once these subside, notes of milk chocolate, aniseed and wood smoke emerge. With a drop of water, more herbal notes appear along with wood smoke and a hint of fresh, salty sea spray.
Expect a distinctively peppery mouthfeel that eases into a mix of treacle toffee, aniseed, salted caramel chocolate and eucalyptus notes, to name but a few. The tingling sensation on the palate continues, with the sweeter flavours giving way to more savoury notes such as charcoal, smoked bacon, burnt toast and tar.
Master Distiller, Ardbeg
This ‘For Discussion’ release started out as a thought experiment by Master Distiller Dr Bill Lumsden after he found new dimensions of smoky flavours when sampling Ardbeg casks at different ages.
The discovery prompted him to ask himself whether a new whisky – smokier, but balanced by ex-sherry casks – could hit that sweet spot.
So it was bottled and released to Ardbeg Committee members to get their thoughts.
The whisky's unmistakeable smoky intensity and unusual maturation, coupled with being chill-filtered for the ultimate mouthfeel, depth and body, led to much discussion – and approval.
