Blend and Origin
Krug Collection 1990
This blend comprises pinot noir (40%), providing the champagne’s power, chardonnay (37%), which imparts elegance, and meunier (23%), which brings freshness. A mild winter followed by a frosty spring was tempered by a hot, sunny summer, resulting in a harvest that produced this rich and balanced champagne with structure and – of course – potential for ageing.

The second life of the 1990 vintage life
Each time a Krug vintage is created, a few bottles are selected to stay behind in the maison’s cellars to become part of the Krug Collection. Cellar Master Eric Lebel is tasked with regularly tasting and evaluating these champagnes, waiting for just the right time to re-release them. Once the time comes, and a particular vintage has fully blossomed into an outstanding new facet of the original, it will receive its cork and become a Krug Collection vintage. Olivier Krug, director of the maison and the sixth generation of the Krug family, will, upon request, bestow each bottle with a signed certificate of authenticity.
The art of time sublimation reaches its very peak in the Krug Collection, and this particular blend alone has spent extra time maturing on lees – a full 25 years. Nestled underneath Krug’s 19th-century maison lie historic havens, accessed by a dimly lit arched stairway, where seemingly endless rows of bottles wait to reach their full expression. Cellar workers examine the contents of their charges, skillfully upending each one in turn. In a separate vast cellar, each wine is hand-rotated in wooden racks, just a quarter-turn at a time.
Krug Collection 1990 is one part of the Krug maison’s trilogy of three exceptional years: 1988, 1989 and 1990, each bottle of which is numbered in descending order according to how many remain in Krug’s cellars. All distinct, these exceptional champagnes have undergone a long maturation to allow new aromas and flavours to develop slowly, with those already present expanding further. In Krug Collection 1990, opulence, creaminess and freshness come together to build a beautifully harmonious elegant and silky character, enhanced by a very long finish.
