Blend and Origin
Krug Clos d'Ambonnay 2000
This 100% pinot noir is characterised by the climatically chaotic 2000. After a clement spring, July saw heavy rainfall and a destructive hailstorm. A warm August and September allowed for bountiful and astoundingly rich grapes – harvested in a single day – and a balanced and intense champagne. Only 5,158 bottles were released, each one individually numbered.

Discovering a tiny treasure
The year 1991 is seminal in the history of Krug, as it marked the end of a seven-year quest to find the perfect plot of land on which to grow pinot noir. The maison had by this time created Clos du Mesnil – its purest expression of chardonnay – and desired an equally rare and exquisite tribute to pinot noir, the varietal closest to the Krug family’s heart. Finally, after an extended search seemed to suggest the most worthy plots had been taken, brothers Rémi, Henri and Olivier Krug uncovered a hidden-away treasure: a tiny 0.68-hectare garden plot in the village of Ambonnay.
Ambonnay has long been renowned for its exceptional terroir – particularly suited to growing pinot noir. When the Krug brothers discovered the small garden plot on the edge of the village in 1991, however, it proved more valuable than they could have ever anticipated. While the vines were relatively young, this forgotten corner proved outstanding. Just one year after its purchase in 1994, the vineyard produced a harvest worthy of its own vintage, and Clos d’Ambonnay 2000 is now the fourth vintage blanc de noirs to be crafted from this iconic walled vineyard.
A vintage of Clos d’Ambonnay will only be released if the harvest from a single year succeeds in expressing the beauty and poise of the plot from which it is grown. In 2000 this was achieved, with the grapes glowing with generosity and intensity, revealing a delightful, balanced character free from excessive aromatic intensity. While nature lays the foundations of the perfect vintage, meticulous attention to detail carries it through to fruition. At Krug, that means allowing time to be a guiding force in ensuring champagnes reach their full expression, and Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 2000 has spent nearly 14 years ageing in the cellar.
