At the house of Krug, each vintage celebrates the unique character of a particular year, in this case 1996. Most Krug vintages are aged for 10 years, but this Cellared Edition has spent 23 years ageing gracefully to gain elegance and depth.

Expressive and aromatic, balanced and finessed, this back vintage retains a staggering amount of freshness considering its age, and offers a unique taste of Krug's rich history.

    Krug Vintage 1996

Temperature variations during the 1996 season – warm days and cool nights – made for a harvest of extremely fresh grapes with a high level of acidity. The blend of 31% chardonnay, 48% pinot noir and 21% meunier from 17 different plots in Champagne finds a unique balance of freshness and maturity.

A LONG LEGACY OF EXCEPTIONALITY

Handing down wise words
Handing down wise words

In 1843, Johann Joseph Krug established the house of Krug, where he diligently recorded all his findings in a cherry-red leather notebook. “Take care to notice everything, and forget nothing,” reads one of his notes. This philosophy is particularly pertinent in the case of the 1996 vintage, when wide variations in temperature leading up to the harvest forced winemakers to pay special attention to subtle – and not-so-subtle – changes throughout the course of the season.

A special year in Champagne
A special year in Champagne

The final Krug vintage to be created by three generations of the Krug family – Paul II, Henry and Rémi, and Olivier – the 1996 was to be a special champagne even before the year had fully revealed itself as exceptional. The entire Champagne region experienced unparalleled weather for grape ripening that year; however, the combined skills and expertise of the Krugs shine through with this champagne. It has proved its excellence year after year, and will continue to do so for many years to come.

Extremely wide temperature variations characterised 1996, with a wet winter and frosts in February followed by a sunny and dry spring, and a very dry September. These variations meant timing was everything in the vineyard, with those among the vines tasked with ensuring the grapes were picked at peak ripeness. Following the harvest, the grapes were vinified in separate seasoned oak casks made from 200-year-old French wood, developing unique qualities that are expressed in the final assemblage.

Food pairing:
Focus on rich, savoury dishes

Starter

Have your first glass with a salmon and courgette tart, or a grilled vegetable napoleon and goat cheese.

Main

Pasta with a creamy mascarpone sauce will pair beautifully with this charismatic vintage. Or try crêpes filled with spinach, Prosciutto and Parmesan.

Dessert

For a sublime match, serve orange tiramisu or pecan pie with fresh cream.
