Interview with designer Daniel W. Fletcher

Clos19 talks to Daniel W. Fletcher, London-based designer and menswear Creative Director for Fiorucci. We discuss his path to becoming a designer, life after participating in Netflix's Next in Fashion, what the art of hosting means to him and he reveals the inspiration behind his latest collection.

How and when did your love for fashion begin?

I was a late bloomer when it came to making the decision to pursue a career in fashion, I was 20 and had just moved to London to study an art foundation course when I realised I could actually turn my interest in a job. It was always there though, I was the kid matching my socks to my t-shirts and drawing dresses for my Mum!

You were 26 when you were nominated for the LVMH Young Designer Prize in 2017, how did that come about and what advice do you have for young designers trying to make it in the fashion industry?

Gain as much experience as you can, intern, get a weekend job, learn as much as you can about all aspects of the industry whilst you are still at uni and have that freedom to explore. And have fun with it, be creative and be yourself. Don’t try to copy anyone else, find your own voice.

What is your fondest memory from your time as a leather goods designer at Louis Vuitton?

The shows were always pretty special, the late nights doing fittings in the run up then the buzz of seeing things I’d worked on head down the runway was an amazing experience so early on in my career. I learned so much from that role that still helps inform how I run my own brand today and I’m incredibly grateful to all of the team at LV.

How has your life and career changed after participating in Netflix’s Next in Fashion?

It’s been a pretty crazy year, I never imagined as a fashion designer people would stop me on the street and ask for a photo! Overall the whole experience was amazing and one of the most rewarding things I’ve taken from it is a renewed energy and passion for what I do.

You always try to convey a message with your collections, what is the story behind your latest collection?

This collection was dedicated to the seamstresses who made it a reality. When the virus hit and all of my factories closed down I wanted to make sure the people that I work with were still supported so I worked with them from home sending fabrics and patterns and it was through the dedication and hard work of these amazing women that it became a reality. I also wanted to use it as an opportunity to re-use and recycle, a lot of the pieces were made using fabrics we already had in the studio so I can continue in my efforts to make the brand more sustainable.

If your designs were a drink, what would they be?

I’d like to think an Espresso Martini, sophisticated but still with hint of fun. I like to take something classic and mix it up a bit, which is a bit like adding vodka to coffee right?

We are all looking forward to reuniting with family and friends again! What is your definition of a great evening? Is there a magical ingredient?

A strong mix of people makes for a great evening I think, some old friends, some new, but not too many. Keep it tight and make sure everyone is introduced and has a drink in their hand!

What is your guilty pleasure when it comes to food and drinks?

I’m a sucker for a pizza and an Aperol Spritz, it makes me think of summers in Italy passed, I’ll be sticking with having them in London until I can get back there.

When entertaining at home, what is your secret weapon?

The Karaoke machine and a rendition of Don’t Cry For Me Argentina!

If you could drink anything, anywhere in the world, what would it be and where?

I’d be back in LA with a Negroni at the hotel bar where I stayed for 2 months filming Next in Fashion, it was such a crazy time in my life I’d like to go back and reminisce.
