Product DetailsA triumph of mineral freshness and sweet tannins, 1999 is the first vintage from the estate – the result of a collaboration between France’s Château Cheval Blanc and Argentina’s Terrazas de los Andes. Only 9,000 bottles of this vintage were made. It is a blend of cabernet sauvignon aged in new oak and malbec matured in one-year-old barrels – an excellent example of an older high-altitude red.

Blend and Origin
Cheval des Andes 1999
Cabernet sauvignon (60%) and malbec (40%) are vinified separately and then blended for this wine. A crisp, frost-free spring in 1999 gave way to a humid summer, and by harvest time the conditions were warm and dry. The cabernet sauvignon benefited from the prolonged ripening season, helping to produce a wine of impressive concentration.

The inaugural vintage of the Grand Cru of the Andes
Cheval des Andes is the product of one man’s vision and a very successful marriage between two prestigious estates – one French and one Argentinian. In the 1990s, Pierre Lurton – director of Saint-Émilion’s Grand Cru Classé Château Cheval Blanc – was so captivated by the breathtaking malbec produced by Terrazas de los Andes, high on the majestic plains of the Andes, that he proposed a joint project between the two estates. The result was Cheval des Andes and the glorious 1999 vintage – the culmination of Old World expertise and New World creativity.
The 1999 vintage is the Argentinian expression of Saint-Émilion’s premier grand cru, Château Cheval Blanc. Refined, elegant, vibrant and enticing, it reflects the passion, expertise and excellence of the French and Argentinian estates at its core. When Pierre Lurton first tasted malbec produced in the exceptional Mendoza terroir, he dreamed of re-establishing the Bordeaux connection with the grape, which had been one of the region’s most important varietals until it was wiped out by pests in the 1860s. Cheval des Andes is the fulfilment of his dream – the perfect assemblage reborn.
The Las Compuertas vineyard, with some vines more than 80 years old, sits more than 1,000 metres high in the foothills of the Andes. A highly treasured high-elevation terroir that imparts a unique quality to the grapes – this is where world-class red wines originate. In 1999, the vines benefited from a dry and sunny growing season, and the grapes ripened in ideal conditions. The ultimate result was a successful crop of concentrated grapes, and this highly integrated and evolved wine.
