A champagne can only be classified as a grand cru when it is made with grapes grown in the 17 Champagne villages designated as grands crus. The vineyards here contain the most prestigious and desirable plots, with terroir that imparts a distinctive character to the fruits.
Focused and rare
Crafted from grapes grown in tiny plots in the Mesnil-sur-Oger and Ambonnay grands crus, Krug’s Clos du Mesnil and Clos d’Ambonnay vintages are extremely rare. Clos du Mesnil reveals the purest expression of chardonnay, while exceptional pinot noir thrives in Clos d’Ambonnay.
When only the best will do
Ruinart’s chardonnay-driven Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs and Rosé are made using exclusively grand cru grapes, harvested and blended in only the best years. The fruits are picked from the most desirable plots in grand cru villages in Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims.
Almost exclusively grand cru
Dom Pérignon’s reputation lies in its almost exclusive production of vintage grand cru champagnes. There is only one notable exception – the maison’s vineyards in the Hautvillers premier cru, the location of the historic abbey and the home of the spiritual father of champagne.
